Praid salt mine archery competition to gather over 200 bow shooters this weekend

Over 200 Romanian and Hungarian athletes are expected to participate on February 8 in an archery competition taking place at the Praid salt mine – Harghita County, an event unique in Europe organized by the „Szirtisas” Sports Club in partnership with the Praid Salt Mine Company.

President of the „Szirtisas” Sports Club Zoltan Lukács told AGERPRES that 204 archers registered in just four days with the 3D Salt Mine Trophy contest. He explained that the underground artificial light and echo could be disturbing for the bow shooters.

„For target aiming, two things are very important, the wind and the light. Here, in the underground, it’s okay that we don’t have wind to sweep the arrows off course, but on the other hand, because there is no natural light, the targets appear differently. And because we are in a fairly large enclosed space, there is also a strange echo that can be disturbing for the archers,” said Zoltan Lukács.

The competition has several age categories, from 10 to over 60 years old, and features various shooting divisions, such as historical, hunting or Olympic shooting.

Lukács Zoltan considers that this competition is unique in Europe, stressing that he does not know of any other such event being organized under similar conditions and with such a large number of competitors.
