The Central Electoral Bureau’s decision to bar Calin Georgescu from running for president is „abusive” and represents „yet another episode in the coup started on December 6”, Chairman of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) George Simion on Monday told a press conference held at the party’s headquarters together with AUR lawmakers; AUR representative in the Central Electoral Bureau, lawyer Ingrid Mocanu who also represents Calin Georgescu, was present at the event too.
„We were aware that the current government was committing abuse, that it was deriding the laws, the Constitution, the will of the Romanian people, but we would never have imagined that something like this would happen. (…) All of Romania needs explanations. Yesterday, as a result of the abusive decision of the Central Electoral Bureau, we experienced a new episode of the coup d’état started on December 6. It’s a black page of our fragile democracy, of our original democracy ŕ la Ion Iliescu. After 11:00 p.m., we saw again Romanians hitting fellow Romanians. We saw injured gendarmes and protesters, just because some criminals once again pitted us against each other in order to cover their tracks and conceal their coup,” Simion declared.
The AUR leader called for „calm, peaceful demonstrations and free elections”, warning of the economic consequences a slip into chaos would have for Romania.
„We are calling for calm, peaceful demonstrations and a return to free elections at the 12th hour. You can easily imagine the economic consequences – we will no longer be able to borrow even at 10% interest,” Simion said. AGERPRES
